ULLIKANA in Bar Harbor SOLD

For More Information: Kim Swan - kim@swanagency.com

The landmark Bar Harbor property, Ullikana in the Field has sold. Former Bar Harbor Hoteliers, Eddie and Judy Hemmingsen purchased the property on March 7th from long time owners and innkeepers Roy Kasindorf and Helen Harton.

Ullikana was purchased by Kasindorf and Harton in 1992 and renovated to create one of Maine’s most popular Bed & Breakfast destinations. After 26 years of hosting thousands of guests Kasindorf and Harton believed it was time to pass on the stewardship of this historical property.

“It was a tough decision to make” said Harton “we have loved everything about the business and the property. We are happy to see Eddie and Judy take the reins and are excited to see what the next chapter of Ullikana will be”. Harton and Kasindorf will remain Bar Harbor residents after the sale with even more time to spend in Acadia and working on new projects.

Ullikana was built in 1885 by Alpheus Hardy who was the first “cottager” in Bar Harbor with “Birch Point”. Ullikana was his second Bar Harbor home, built in what was a field in the middle of the village, close to the ocean. The name “The Field” stuck and is still the address today of this iconic property between Bar Harbor Bank & Trust on Main Street and the Bar Harbor Inn on the Shorepath. “Nobody knows where the name came from”, said Kasindorf, “we have done lots of research and heard lots of opinions but there is no definite knowledge of why Hardy named the property Ullikana”.

Eddie and Judy Hemmingsen were successful Bar Harbor lodging fixtures for many years owning and operating the Bar Harbor Hotel - Bluenose Inn and The Rose Garden from 1979 - 2000. Their next project was the creation of the Belfast Bay Inn, an exquisite property on Main Street in Belfast that was just awarded TripAdvisor’s #9 of the Top 25 Best Hotels in the United States, the only Maine property to make the list.

“As much as we have loved the challenge and huge success of our Belfast property, our hearts were always pulling us back to Bar Harbor”, said Judy and Eddie Hemmingsen. “We have been looking for the perfect property and time and time again we have been attracted to The Ullikana. The location, building, grounds, ocean views and the business that Roy and Helene have built was just too enticing to pass up”.

The Hemmingsens plan to create several suites at the property before opening for the 2017 Season on Memorial Day Weekend.

Kimberly Swan of The Swan Agency Sotheby’s International Realty brokered the sale.
